Navy's Aegis system to use networking technology

Lockheed Martin Corp. has selected computer networking technology from CA Inc. for the Navy’s Aegis Open Architecture Weapon System.

CA will provide its Spectrum Network Fault Manager as part of the Aegis system, CA officials said. The Spectrum Network Fault Manager helps verify the performance and availability of computing networks with automated service, fault and configuration management.

Root cause and impact analysis technology helps pinpoint degraded or failed network components, calculates impact and offers actions to resolve incidents.

Lockheed Martin installed the configuration that includes CA’s technology aboard the Guided Missile Cruiser Bunker Hill as part of the ship’s modernization. The company developed Aegis using commonly available, commercial off-the-shelf computing hardware and software.

The Navy chose this approach in an effort to keep its weapons technology cutting edge, CA said. The Navy can more easily do technology refreshes and upgrades to the system because CA’s technology is readily available and upgraded regularly, CA officials said.
