The Army recently completed a limited user test of Increment 2 of its next-generation broadband communications network.
The test of the Warfighter Information Network – Tactical Increment 2 was conducted by soldiers of the 4th Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, at Fort Lewis, Wash., and the 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Stewart, Ga., over a 3,000-mile geographic area, said General Dynamics C4 Systems.
The goal of the radio communications project, which is planned in four increments, is to provide Army ground forces dispersed across wide geographic areas with on-the-move, broadband networking capabilities. WIN-T Increment 2 provides initial mobile networking for Army divisions, brigade combat teams, battalions and companies.
The tests were carried out between March 18 and March 30, company officials said. General Dynamics personnel assisted with the tests in which units shared command and control information from the command post down to the company level.
If the Army gives its approval for low-rate production, then delivery of the new equipment to the first unit would begin in late 2010, General Dynamics officials said.
General Dynamics C4 Systems is the prime contractor for WIN-T Increments 1 and 2. The Scottsdale, Ariz.-based unit leads an industry team that includes Lockheed Martin Corp., BAE Systems Inc., Harris Corp., L-3 Communications Corp., Juniper Networks Inc., and Cisco Systems Inc.
