Navy to enhance ship electronic warfare systems

Lockheed Martin Corp. will help the Navy develop surface electronic warfare technology designed to improve the Navy’s ability to detect threats under a new $9.9 million contract.

Through the Surface Electronic Warfare Improvement Program, the Navy plans to enhance its existing systems. Under the contract, Lockheed Martin will provide new capabilities based on the company’s Integrated Common Electronics Warfare System, demonstrated at sea last summer, company officials said today.  

Lockheed Martin’s technology uses commercial, off-the-shelf electronics, the officials said. The new electronics also make it easier to upgrade the technology to address emerging threats.

The contract includes options that could raise the value to as much as $167 million. Lockheed Martin recently won a contract to support the Aegis ballistic missile defense weapon system.
