Wennergren's new job announcement

Former DOD Deputy CIO Dave Wennergren has received his new assignment: assistant deputy chief management officer, Office of the Deputy Secretary of Defense, Washington, D.C.

Wennergren's previous position -- deputy assistant secretary of defense, information management, integration and technology, and deputy chief information officer, Office of the Secretary of Defense -- (breathe) is about to cease to exist. In that role, Wennergren  was charged with "providing top-level advocacy in creating a unified information management and technology vision for the Department and ensuring the delivery of the capabilities required to achieve the Department’s transformation to net centric operations," according to his bio on the Networks and Information Integration office's website.

Details about his new job have not yet been made available.

Wennergren's job status has been in limbo since Defense Secretary Robert Gates announced he would shutter the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense (Networks and Information Integration), the de facto home of DOD's CIO role as well as Wennergren's previous position. The fate of the DOD CIO role has also been in question as the department works out how the NII job duties will be parsed out across other existing agencies and offices.

It is expected that the CIO job will be "strengthened" and become a function of the Defense Information Systems Agency, as Gates has detailed in recent explanations of his plans for reform at DOD.

Last week, the White House withdrew its nomination of California CIO Teri Takai as the new DOD CIO.
