Marines select provider for base network upgrade

The Marine Corps Systems Command has awarded a $9.3 million task order to General Dynamics Corp. to install a new backbone transport network at three bases that will support next-generation IT and communications efforts.

Under the contract, General Dynamics will design, install and test a dense wavelength division multiplexing network at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego; Camp Pendleton, Calif. and Camp Lejeune, N.C., company officials said today.

Dense wavelength multiplexing is the process of combining multiple communications signals for transmission along a single fiber to increase capacity and boost speed. The communications signals transmitted can include data, voice, IP asynchronous transfer mode, and synchronous optical networking.

The eight-month task order was awarded through the Air Force’s Network-Centric Solutions program.
