Hackers steal personal military data in Gannett breach
A breach of Gannett Government Media in early June resulted in the pilfering of personal data of members of the U.S. military, which is highly sought-after by cyber criminals.
The breach of the Gannett Co. subsidiary Gannett Government Media Corp., first detected June 7, appears to have been aimed at gaining access to the personal data of members of the U.S. military, reports Reuters.
The names, passwords and e-mail addresses of Gannett readers, including subscribers of Defense News and several other defense publications, were stolen, as well as the duty status, paygrade and branch of service of readers who are in the military.
The article noted that the data purloined in the breach is “highly coveted” by hackers interested in attacking classified systems.
