DOD rule would shield unclassified info from cyberattack

Military contractors would face new requirements for protecting unclassified information from cyberattack under a draft rule published June 29 in the Federal Register, reports Federal Times.

The proposed regulation creates two levels of safeguards – basic and enhanced – on unclassified Defense Department records not approved for public release that are either provided by the DOD to the contractor or developed by the contractor for the DOD.

The basic safeguards would prohibit contractors from accessing the information on public computers or posting it on publicly accessible websites, and the enhanced safeguards would require contractors to follow multiple security recommendations when working with records labeled “For Official Use Only” or considered critical to a specific mission.
