The military has been weighing its options to get smart phones and other mobile technology on the battlefield, and now the Army’s Fifth Signal Command is preparing to order thousands of mobile devices for soldiers, reports Information Week.

A request for information from the Defense Information Systems Agency seeks to gather market data before the Army combines two of its communications contracts into one vehicle that will supply its European divisions with all their wireless and mobile device needs, the article said.

The RFI looks at the iPhone, Droid and BlackBerry, as well as tablets and wireless access devices.
