The Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR) plans on Feb. 1 to award a $690 million contract for shipboard networks to one of two major defense contractors, reports NextGov.
SPAWAR will award the contract to equip 54 ships in a two-year period to either Lockheed Martin or Northrop Grumman, Capt. D.J. LeGoff, Consolidated Afloat Networks and Enterprise Services program manager said last week at the AFCEA West 2012 conference in San Diego. The companies won contracts in 2011 to develop prototypes.
The Navy will run continuous competitions until it installs the next-generation network on all 286 ships and more than 60 submarines in the fleet, the story said.
