Army combat teams begin training with new network equipment
Two Army brigade combat teams of the 10th Mountain Division have begun training with the first fielding of Capability Set 13 vehicles and equipment before redeploying to Afghanistan in 2013.
Two Army brigade combat teams of the 10th Mountain Division have begun training with the first fielding of Capability Set 13 vehicles and equipment that offer for the first time key networked features for command on-the-move and for dismounted soldiers, the Army said Oct. 15. The two units will redeploy early next year to Afghanistan with the new capabilities.
CS 13 comprises a fully integrated package of radios, satellite systems, software applications, smart phone-like devices designed to give integrated connectivity to all elements of a BCT, including static tactical operations centers, commanders on-the-move and dismounted soldiers.
Specifically, CS 13 will enable commanders to have networked capabilities in, for example, mine-resistant ambush-protected vehicles. It also will give dismounted soldiers network capabilities that can enhance their awareness of their surroundings and identify threats with real-time information.
The 3rd and 4th BCTs, located at Fort Drum, N.Y. and Fort Polk, La., respectively, will receive several months of classroom and hand-on training with CS 13.
Both units have previously served in Afghanistan. When they return to the country, the new mobile communications gear will give them fully networked capabilities both in vehicles and dismounted while they conduct combat and security assistance missions.
