Successful launch by MUOS-2 military satellite
MUOS-2 is part of a next generation narrowband military communication system.
The second mobile user objective system satellite was successfully launched on July 19 at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla.
The MUOS platform is a narrowband military satellite communication system to support the unified commands. "MUOS is providing capability for mobile users that never existed before," said Iris Bombelyn, Lockheed Martin vice president of Narrowband Communications.
MUOS-2 launched at 9:00 a.m. EDT and will use the next nine days to reach its orbit location 22,000 miles above earth. Following the deployment of solar arrays and antennas, on-orbit testing for the Navy will begin.
The MUOS-1 satellite was launched in February 2012. The total constellation includes four satellites and one on-orbit spare.
