DOD weighing cuts to combatant commands
Up to 5,000 military and civilian positions may be eliminated if sequestration forces the Pentagon to realign its commands.
Members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and other senior officials have been weighing the options for command realignments since last year, according to the report.
Challenged by sequestration, the Defense Department is considering realigning its combatant commands to reduce spending, reported Federal Times. Consolidations and reductions in force could eliminate more than 5,000 military and civilian positions.
Defense sources told Federal Times that some options include combining the Northern and Southern Commands, dissolving the Africa Command and reassigning those areas to the European and Central Commands. Pacific Command could reportedly be expanded under the plan as part of a realignment of forces to the region.
