Navy announces hosted virtual desktop pilot program

The Navy announced in a recent memo that it is evaluating use of hosted virtual desktops (HVD) as an cost-saving platform to help reduce IT spending. 

HVD provides a network-centric virtual desktop hosted from a data center that allows the desktop to be run on multiple devices, both inside and outside the unclassified Navy Marine Corps Intranet. Because the platform is not physically loaded on a specific device, HVD will also reduce onsite technical support requirements and allow for a more centralized security system. 

HVD also is being touted as delivering increased flexibility, mobility, productivity and security. The Navy has approved a bring-your-own-device strategy allowing the use of personal computers and other devices requiring remote access to controlled, unclassified information. 

The Navy said its HVD pilot program will support up to 7,500 users.  Further rollout of HVD capabilities will be determined pending the results of the pilot program.
