Budget analyst Fox named deputy defense secretary

Christine Fox moves up to No.2 post at DOD from program evaluation office.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel announced Dec. 3 that he has appointed Christine Fox, a budget specialist, to be acting deputy secretary of defense.

Fox replaces Ashton Carter, who is scheduled to leave the No. 2 post at DOD on Dec. 5.

Hagel said Fox played a key role in a DOD management review earlier this year. She has served as director of cost assessment and program evaluation since November 2009.

Fox “helped identify the challenges, choices and opportunities for reform facing the department during this period of unprecedented budget uncertainty,” Hagel added in a statement. “She will be able to help me shape our priorities from day one because she knows the intricacies of the department's budget, programs and global operations better than anyone.”

Fox previously served as president of the Center for Naval Analyses, where she oversaw the federally funded R&D center’s analysis of U.S. combat operations in Bosnia and Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq.
