Marines planning to virtualize desktops

The Marine Corps, having virtualized its IT infrastructure years ago, is now looking to put secure virtual machines on desktops.

The Marine Corps Systems Command has issued a request for information https://www.fbo.gov/index?s=opportunity&mode=form&id=378ea22aa33e2b35a9d4f3cc94b05524&tab=core&_cview=0 seeking industry input on a virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) that can work on classified networks.

MCSC wants respondents to address the technical challenges and estimated cost of a classified VDI, while answering four questions:

1. Which available VDI solutions can meet all of the Corps’ requirements?

2. Does the government's technical approach limit industry offerings?

3. Do companies responding to the RFI hold a government wide acquisition contract or other contract vehicle that allows outside agency ordering authority?

4. Do companies, based on their experience, have any lessons learned on total-solution VDI packages similar to this?

The Marine Corps is looking for a provider to develop and deliver a high-availability system that will be installed on garrison classified networks, according to the RFI.

Responses are due by 2 p.m. Eastern time on Jan. 20.
