The Navy’s eDIVO app puts a lot of essential information at sailors’ fingertips.

IT projects by the Navy and Army are among the 10 winners named for this year’s GCN Awards, which honor innovation and excellence in public-sector information technology. (GCN is a sister publication of Defense Systems.)

The winning projects include the Navy’s eDIVO Mobile App, the creation of two junior officers looking to streamline access to military guidance, and the Army’s Global Combat Support System, which provides a single view of the service’s logistical supply, tactical and financial systems. Another Army project, the Communications Facility for Southwest Asia Theater—a 20,000-square-foot state-of-the-art communications hub in Kuwait, received an honorable mention.

The eDIVO app was born when Lt. Charlie Hymen and Lt. John Harry, facing their first sea tour and annoyed with having to cull numerous websites and documents for information necessary to do their jobs, approached the Navy Sea Warrior Program about putting all that information in one place. The resulting app, available for free on the App Store and Google Play Store, gives sailors quick, easy access to more than 44 documents and 8,300 pages of information. Within a month of its release in March, eDIVO had been downloaded more than 10,000 times.

The Global Combat Support System-Army, or GCSS-A, the largest enterprise resource planning deployment in Army history, combines 40,000 systems to give more than 154,000 Army users a single, Web-based system for logistics support. The system also has undergone some recent upgrades, such extending it to the battlefield via very small aperture terminals that provide satellite ink to the Internet.

The winning teams will be honored at the GCN Awards Gala Oct. 14 at the Ritz Carlton in Tyson’s Corner, Va. For more on the other winners, check out GCN’s story.
