Defense One Summit to convene in November

It has been nearly three months since we launched Defense One, Atlantic Media’s newest media outfit providing national security news, analysis, and ideas. It’s with equal excitement and pride that we announce the inaugural Defense One Summit, coming Nov. 14th to Washington, DC.  

The Defense One Summit will gather an exclusive, highly concentrated audience of senior national security and defense leaders to look deep into the unprecedented transformation of national security strategy and operations facing U.S. leaders today. In July, Defense One created a new digital space for national security leaders, influential professionals, stakeholders and interested citizens to engage in in-depth news and analysis. Next, the Defense One Summit will convene this audience to debate the big ideas, share leadership lessons and have timely conversation about what comes next for all of us.  

“In a time of shifting threat frontiers, tight budgets and rapidly changing technology, members of this community face stark choices as they try to secure and defend our nation,” said Tim Hartman, president of Atlantic Media’s Government Executive Media, which produces Defense One. “The Defense One Summit will explore the ideas and strategies defining the future of our national defense.”

It's clear that the United States is now firmly responsible for global security. But to what extent? And what cost? My goal is that the Defense One Summit will spark an overdue conversation to define the post-war boundaries of U.S. national security, America’s responsibility to the world and the appropriate use of military power in this new era.

The summit will explore a series of provocative questions focused on evolving threats at the forefront of national security concerns.  Through one-on-one interviews, or giving their own remarks, Department of Defense leaders, national security experts and military commanders will discuss on the main stage the most pressing issues at the future of defense from their vantage point.

The event’s moderators include CBS News’ White House Correspondent Major Garrett and CNN’s Pentagon Correspondent Barbara Starr,  Al Jazeera America's Senior Staff Writer Jamie Tarabay,  along with Defense One’s Associate Editor/Senior Reporter Stephanie Gaskell, and others.

Topics to be explored throughout the day include:

• What are the post-war era goals and boundaries for American interests, intervention and the use of military force?
• How are shifting frontiers like the pivot to Asia and evolving threats like cyber forcing national security leaders to make new choices about American power?
• How are Pentagon leaders grappling with building and managing the strong but agile national security architecture they desire to match the coming age?
• What role should the U.S. play in the new Middle East?
• Should the U.S. ever respond to digital threats and cyber attacks with military force?

The Defense One Summit will convene a pre-qualified, invitation-only audience on Nov. 14, 2013 at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Washington D.C.
