Defense One Tech Summit: In Review

Did you miss our first-ever Defense One Tech Summit? Catch the whole thing, start to finish, right here.

If you couldn't watch live or in person, catch the Defense Secretary Ash Carter and some of the brightest minds in military and consumer technology discussing the future of innovation and national security at the Defense One Tech Summit in Washington, D.C., on June 10.

A sampling of what you'll learn:

  • The Defense Department's "Hack the Pentagon" campaign has already found more than 100 bugs, according to Secretary Carter.
  • The U.S. military is looking into an “Arsenal Plane,” which would carry weapons to be fired by another aircraft, said Dr. William Roper of the Defense Secretary's Strategic Capabilities Office.
  • There are more roboticists in Pittsburgh than Boston and Silicon Valley combined.
  • "Most of U.S. military recruits come from only six states," Carter said.
  • Work at the Defense Digital Service is a "tour of duty for nerds," said DDS Director Chris Lynch.
  • The NSA's workforce is about 60 percent civilian and 40 percent military personnel, Deputy Director Richard Ledgett said.
  • "I look at [Silicon Valley] as a public ponzi scheme" since they can't translate ideas into products, said Gregory Glaros, CEO and Chief Technology Officer of Synexxus.
  • "You can move fast and stay secure with cloud" technology, said Teresa Carlson, Vice President of Amazon Web Services' World Wide Public Sector.
  • And what the heck is a "billion-toaster botnet"? Watch the sessions below to find out the answer to that—and a lot more.
