Welcome to The Army Brief, a weekly look at the news and ideas shaping the service’s future.
Abortion access. Doctors and troops told lawmakers about their experience with abortion, and expressed concerns about challenges others may face following the repeal of Roe v. Wade, Defense One reports. More troops may have to travel to access an abortion if the state they are stationed in greatly restricts or bans the procedure. One doctor also said she was worried about being arrested off base for performing legal abortions at a military medical facility.
Crash reporting. A new Pentagon office is working to standardize the data the services provide following an aircraft crash or tactical vehicle accident, Defense One reports. The Joint Safety Council will meet with senior service leaders at least twice a year to keep them informed, after an independent commission found one reason for past deadly accidents was because of leaders’ inattention to the issue.
Munitions shipment. The U.S. is sending 75,000 rounds of 155mm rounds to Ukraine, as well as more ammunition for their HIMARS, Defense One reports. The $550 million security package brings the total assistance to Ukraine to $8.8 billion.
