Welcome to The Army Brief, a weekly look at the news and ideas shaping the service’s future. 

Counseling periods. The Army is using counseling during specific times in a command sergeant major’s tour to reduce and prevent instances of misconduct, Defense One reports. The time periods with the most risk are at the three month mark, the year mark, and two months before they end their tour. 

To tweet or not to tweet. Sgt. Major of the Army Michael Grinston told fellow non-commissioned officers to defend their soldiers in person and online, a departure from the caution advised by Army Secretary Christine Wormuth just days earlier, Defense One reports. Grinston did say that social media posts need to remain professional and done the right way, in agreement with Wormuth’s statements. 

Divisions to take center stage. Brigade combat teams are expected to face fierce battles in future large-scale conflicts, so the Army is looking to deploy divisions and corps to help manage planning and resources, Defense One reports. The larger formations will also help BCTs stay in the fight for weeks and months, which is now seen as a requirement based on lessons from the war in Ukraine.
