The godfather of FirstGov returns

Bill Piatt, former chief information officer at the General Services Administration, is returning to work in GSA’s Office of Governmentwide Policy, according to a news report.

Piatt is leaving his position as CIO of the World Bank’s International Finance Corporation to be director of the Technology Strategy Office in OGP, the DorobekInsider reports, citing an internal announcement from Kathleen Turco, the new associate administrator of OGP. He starts May 24.

Piatt is the godfather of FirstGov, which is now named USA.gov. In 2000, he prophesied that FirstGov would transform the very structure and operation of the federal bureaucracy, FCW reported. In the report, he said FirstGov would force agencies to be more open to the public and allow for agencies to carry out transactions over the Internet. A decade later, both are tenets of the Obama administration.

Piatt was GSA's CIO from 1999 to 2000.
